The undefeated Black Caviar, Australia’s darling known as the ‘Wonder from Down Under,’ has passed away at the age of 17, one day shy of her 18th birthday.
The retired Australian mare achieved an unprecedented 25 consecutive victories during her career, spanning from 2009 to 2013. She earned the title of the world’s best sprinter four times and was named Australian Racehorse of the Year on three occasions. Her fame in Australia was so immense that she graced the cover of Vogue magazine.
Sadly, Black Caviar had been battling laminitis, a painful hoof condition, and was humanely euthanized after giving birth to a foal. Tragically, her final foal, a colt, also passed away shortly after.
The loss of Black Caviar, one of Australia’s most beloved thoroughbreds, has led to a wave of sorrow from the racing community and fans worldwide.
‘‘The ownership group are devastated, however will reflect on her glittering achievements not only in Australia where she transcended racing and captured the hearts of the public, but in England where she famously won the 2012 group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot.’’
