Think all the early Vegas casino legends were mobsters in sharp suits? Think again! The very first legal casino license in Las Vegas went to a woman โ Mayme Stocker โ in 1920 for her venue, the Northern Club.
Mayme wasnโt your typical casino boss. She was a respectable wife and mother, often featured in the local newspaperโs society pages. While her husband Harold was hesitant to be involved, she fearlessly opened the casino in her own name โ talk about bold!
Her casino offered the only five games legal in Vegas at the time:
Stud Poker
Draw Poker
Lowball Poker
500
Bridge
Mayme helped lay the foundation for the Vegas we know today โ proving women were always part of the action.
